Harvest Time!

by Tony

One of the types of habitat we manage and hunt here is flooded agricultural fields.  We will go in and cut strips in the corn, then flood what is left to the ears.  To say it’s a duck magnet is an understatement!!!  Whether you are farming for ducks, or farming to make a living, Mother Nature dictates when and what you can do.   Unfortnately, she has been in somewhat of a bad mood this year.  It’s been a delayed harvest and now Mother Nature has thrown potentially heavy rainfall into the mix……time to get some corn out while we can!

Heath coming out for a quick stretch…

Turned the pumps on while the combine was on it’s last couple laps…

Looks really good!

With the heavy rains forecasted, there wasn’t any time to waste on the next farm…

Dan burning the midnight oil…

We didn’t get all the corn we wanted to cut, but enough!  It started to sprinkle as the last load of corn was heading up out of the bottoms.  All three wells were turned on as we left, now bring on the ducks!

I don’t know about a pot of gold out in this flooded cornfield, but you can bet there is going to be a pot FULL of greenheads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quite a few early migrants have already shown up, it’s going to be another incredible fall!  The Halloween opening day can’t get here soon enough!

Pumping Water

by Tony

It’s a beautiful time of year around here and time to start pumping water!  We have water on some of the moist soil units from teal season, but need to add to it.  It’s also time to start pumping up some of the other favorite holes.

Getting started…                                                     Gaining on it!!!!!

There will be some good times in this hole this fall when it gets to full pool!!

So much to do, so little time!

Ira is daydreaming about all the mallards that will be filling up the timber holes this fall!

First Deer Blood

by Ira

Our first bow hunter of the year crawled into a stand on the afternoon of October 11th.  Bob didnt have to wait long for this nice buck to come walking by.  We had a trail cam pic of him from a couple of weeks before.

He didnt go far and we had a happy hunter!
